I apologize that this billboard was posted with a mistake.

Re: Gordon Building

Thanks, but this article was written by Chris Brimley, not me.

Re: Gordon Building

Thanks Frank for the tutorial. Good stuff.

Steve....I used the Arial Black method for lots of signs including a "Davids" look-a-like sign on my "Bernies Grocery". I too thought the building looked out of proportion, almost cartoonish, so I'm relieved it wasn't just me. Didn't want to come across as critical for fear of offending Jim's efforts. He almost pulled it off in so far as making the chicken salad.

Re: Downtown Deco: Patterson’s Hardware

BTW, Ben, if your intent was to share photos, nothing came across except for your web link.

Re: Downtown Deco: Patterson’s Hardware

Ben,

Sorry that I missed this comment and didn't approve it until now. This is hard earned cash that we fork out for this stuff, and as was pointed out, it looks like nothing more than a caricature.
I'm a professional model maker. I've molded and cast thousands of master patterns for a leading resin manufacturer and literally cast hundreds of thousands of pieces with a crew of 15 over many years and I can tell you that even in this small scale, it could be a LOT better quality.
It made me angry to see what you had to work with Jim, and again, I offer my apologies. I am stepping up to the plate however and entering into the industry for the second time in 25 years to release items to the market place that modelers will be proud to have on their models, two pictures of which I've attached of the master patterns.
Please forgive me my tyrade, but I feel N Scale and it's following have sufferd enough and any other scale for that matter.

My kindest regards everyone.

Ben Jakobsen
http://public.fotki.com/ben...

Re: N Scale Ford Billboard

Great work - thanks so much for sharing!

Dave
Qld, Australia

Re: Stump Tower Kitbash: Part 2

Very nice Frank, I can't wait to see the finished product!

Re: Scratch Build a Pushcart Fruit Vendor

lol cool way to make a pushcart

Re: Downtown Deco: Patterson’s Hardware

Amazing work. The kit is nice, but the weathering really locked it. You pulled it off really well. Some of their earlier buildings seemed to be deliberate caricatures of prototypes. That made for some intersting structures, but not what I would use.

Re: Downtown Deco: Patterson’s Hardware

I think you did a fine job of building the kit, Jim. My complaint has to do with the scale fidelity of it. If you compare the picture of the O-scale structure on the box with the actual N-scale structure (to me) it looks like a caricature of the larger structure, not a scaled down model. This is often the case when a larger scale modeler attempts to build in a smaller scale. It's as if he is programmed to model things heavier and bulkier than they should be. The fact that the medium of plaster is chosen only exacerbates the situation.

Don't get me wrong, I think that plaster is a wonderful medium and I have had great success with larger scale models, but in the smaller more delicate and ultra-fine detailing required in N and smaller scales, it's not the best choice.

Re: Build a Lift Bridge View Block

I'm doing something similar to this right now. My firsts scratch build too! Just making a simple 3-beam highway overpass but it will disguise a similar situation!
